What is the CME premium? It's a thermometer for US institutions' appetite to buy. Futures above spot (premium) is read as a willingness to pay up to buy; below spot (discount) as a willingness to sell at a loss.
What are futures?
Futures are contracts that agree in advance to buy or sell at a set price later. Unlike spot, where coins change hands right away, they carry expectations about future prices, so the gap from spot tends to widen.
Why CME specifically?
CME is the leading US derivatives exchange, used mainly by traditional financial institutions such as pension funds and hedge funds. So whether CME futures are above or below spot is read as a window into US institutions' buying appetite.
Does a premium mean prices will rise?
Not necessarily. A premium is often read as strong institutional buying appetite, but some see an excessive premium as overheating. Rather than calling a direction, watch for changes such as a premium flipping to a discount.
